Open licences allow anyone to copy and share material, provided they follow the terms of use.
Examples are:
- ‘Creative Commons’ licences
- ‘Open Access’ licences
- the terms of use for many websites
- Open Licence for Newspaper Content
Before you seek to rely on an open licence you may need to check:
- does the open licence apply to your activity? (e.g. many open licences do not apply to for-profit activities)
- are you complying with the terms of use? (e.g. many open licences require attribution)
