Event Description
You are invited to join us for a very special event with Mexican-American writer and PEN International’s first woman President, Jennifer Clement. In this Sydney PEN’s Free Voices Lecture Jennifer will share with us her unique experiences to celebrate International Women’s Day.
About Jennifer
From 2009 to 2012 Jennifer was president of PEN Mexico and her work focused on the disappearance and death of journalists. Her writing and activism represent a life-long commitment to honouring those silenced by gender, class and race. In 2014 she was awarded the Sara Curry Humanitarian Award for her novel, Prayers for the Stolen, which involved over ten years of research on the abduction of young girls in Mexico.
About this Lecture
Jennifer will speak about how PEN Mexico and PEN International used shame as a strategy to influence Mexican government into changing the criminal laws to enhance the rights of journalists, as well as the powerful lessons she learned when writing her award-winning novel, Prayers for the Stolen.
