Copyright Agency provides licence solution for NGA’s Sharing the National Collection initiative

Our Visual Arts licensing team have been working closely with the National Gallery and its partner venues as part of their Sharing the National Collection initiative, offering simple licence solutions to cover marketing and promotional uses.
The initiative, launched last year and supported by the Australian Government’s cultural policy, Revive, has seen iconic pieces from the National Gallery of Australia shared with regional and suburban galleries across the country.
Copyright Agency are licensing works by Giorgio Morandi, Andy Warhol, Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, Agnes Martin, Albert Namatjira and Bruce Nauman, with more still to be confirmed. With the team’s expertise in creating fair licensing agreements, the NGA and its partners have ensured that the artists and their estates are renumerated appropriately for the unique use of their works.
Many iconic pieces, including works on paper, paintings, ceramics, and sculptures have travelled to cultural institutions in NSW, Western Australia and Queensland as part of the initiative so far, with more to be announced. Regional and suburban galleries can register their expressions of interest via this link.
One logistical achievement was the transportation of the Barnett Newman sculpture, Broken obelisk, a seven-metre, three-and-a-half tonne sculpture that made its way to the Shoalhaven Regional Gallery Nowra back in March. Watch its journey here. The piece will welcome visitors to the Gallery for the next five years.
