The Chamber of Arts and Culture Western Australia (CACWA) are presenting the first of their Cultural Connections series of critical conversations, held at and co-hosted by the John Curtin Gallery at John Curtin University in Perth on 3 March.
The event features an impressive panel of experts from varied sectors of the arts world: Sisonke Msimang will facilitate, and alongside her will be Clothilde Bullen (Curator and Head of Indigenous Programs, Art Gallery of WA), James Berlyn (Artistic Director, WA Youth Theatre Company), Yaso- Ponnuthurai (Musician, Founder Indianeye, and Not-For-Profit Director), and Kathleen Toomath (Carrolup Manager, John Curtin Gallery).
CACWA decribes the event is “designed for us to collectively imagine the future of our sector through the voices of artists, arts workers, arts producers, and arts interpreters across various disciplines. The events over the last 20 months have ignited issues that have been smouldering in Western Australian society for decades – the roles and rights of our First Nations peoples, our multiculturalism and the sense of belonging for migrants, the importance of place and the impacts of technology, and the engagement and empowerment of young people.”
The John Curtin Gallery will host this event amongst a backdrop of three significant art exhibitions that tie in with the theme of the panel conversations:
Carrolup coolingah wirn – The spirit of Carrolup children, Julie Dowling’s Bidya Gurlbarl (Open Secret), and Isaac Julien’s Perth Festival installation.
Attendees are welcome to view the exhibitions after the panel event has ended.
