Research reveals opportunities for Australian trade publishers in Indonesia, India, Malaysia
September 24, 2020
Dr Nathan Hollier, Publisher and CEO at Melbourne University Publishing (formerly Director at Monash University Publishing) was the 2018 recipient of the Copyright Agency’s Publisher Fellowship.
Nathan’s research project focused on the opportunities and obstacles for book publishing in Asia Pacific markets, traveling to International Book Fairs in Jakarta, Delhi and Kuala Lumpur while also exploring partnerships with publishers and industry professionals.
The Fellowship enabled me to become an expert, within the Australian context, on publishing in Indonesia, India and Malaysia. As part of that, the grant enabled me to build and/or develop further professional relationships with industry participants in these territories.
To operate effectively in the markets of Malaysia, Indonesia and India, we need some understanding of local conditions, beliefs, and ways of thinking, and to work on building relationships of mutual respect with people in these nations, willing to meet us, get to know us, and do business with us. Many such people do exist, in all of these nations. It has been a great privilege to get to know, and to start to do business, with some of them.
Copyright Agency CEO, Adam Suckling, said, “The Publisher Fellowships support the pursuit of innovation and advanced learning from global experiences which can deliver benefits to the Australian publishing sector.”
