Member survey on GenAI
December 5, 2024
In September, we invited members to complete a survey about Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI). We asked about attitudes towards overseas developers’ use of Australians’ material to train large language models. We also requested feedback on two AI-related licensing proposals for businesses that are covered by our Annual Business Licence:
- to allow staff to use copyright material in connection with prompts for GenAI tools used in the workplace; and
- to assist businesses to to develop or enhance GenAI tools to be used in-house
We thank the 1,304 members who completed the survey and gave us valuable feedback.
Here are some key results from the survey:
- 65% said they had used or experimented with a GenAI tool
- 86% agreed that the Australian government should put a law or mechanism in place to compensate Australians whose material has been used in offshore development
- 70% confirmed that they would be more supportive of GenAI development in Australia if creators were compensated for the use of their material in offshore development
- some members indicated a lack of familiarity with Generative AI tools, including how copyright material can be used in connection with prompts for Generative AI tools
- some members asked for more information about our proposals for licensing AI-related activity
Since the survey, we have:
- continued to advocate for a new law, separate to copyright, that would compensate Australians whose works have been used offshore for training
- published videos showing how GenAI tools work
- published information about the extension to our Annual Business Licence to staff use of copyright material in connection with prompts for GenAI tools and Q&As on the licence extension
- contacted members about participation in the licence extension
