CLA announces TDM licence

July 26, 2024

On 25 July, UK-based Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) announced a new licence for text and data mining (TDM).

You can see the announcement here.

CLA describes TDM as ‘the process of using computational techniques to extract valuable insights and patterns from large volumes of information’.

Its licence will allow organisations to carry out or perform computational analysis on extracts from licensed works solely to identify patterns and trends in those works, for internal use.

The licence does not apply to Generative AI, for which CLA is developing a separate licence.

The CLA announcement follows a consultation process with its four member organisations: Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society (ALCS), Design & Artists Copyright Society (DACS), Picture Industry Collecting Society for Effective Licensing (PICSEL), and Publishers Licensing Society (PLS).
