European Parliament approves EU AI Act

On 13 March, the European Parliament approved the European Union (EU) Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act).

The next steps are:
- a final lawyer-linguist check
- formal endorsement by the European Council
- publication in the official Journal (expected April/May)
- entry into force 20 days after publication
Following entry into force, the timeline is:
- bans on prohibited practices: 6 months
- codes of practice: 9 months
- general purpose AI rules including governance: 12 months
- fully applicable 24 months
- obligations for high-risk systems: 36 months
