Consultation on First Nations traditional knowledge and cultural expressions
March 5, 2024
On 4 March 2024, the Australian Government announced its consultation process on protecting First Nations traditional knowledge and cultural expressions.
You can see the announcement here, and more information on the Office for the Arts website here.
The development of the legislation is a commitment under the National Cultural Policy, Revive: a place for every story, a story for every place.
The consultation process will include 50 community engagement sessions in 38 locations across Australia between 4 March and 2 May 2024. People can also provide views online, by 15 June 2024.
The announcement confirms that the new legislation will be developed through a First Nations-led process.
Copyright Agency provides royalties from copyright licensing and the artists’ resale royalty scheme to many First Nations artists and writers. We work closely with First Nations organisations like the Indigenous Art Code, art centre bodies and First Nations Australian Writers Network. We have a Reconciliation Action Plan and we follow and recommend the Protocols for using First Nations Cultural and Intellectual Property in the Arts developed by Creative Australia.
