2023 King’s Birthday Honours List

Congratulations to our members who were among those recognised in the 2023 King’s Birthday Honours List.
Author Jen McVeity was recognised with a medal (OAM) in the general division for service to literacy education as an author and publisher. An author of over 20 books, a former school teacher, and the International Chair of the Society of Children’s Writers and Illustrators, Jen is also the founder and CEO of Seven Steps for Writing Success.
Wendy Sharpe was recognised as a member (AM) for significant service to the visual arts, and to the community. Wendy is one of Australia’s most acclaimed artists, she’s been awarded The Sulman Prize, two Travelling Scholarships, The Portia Geach Memorial Award (twice), and The Archibald Prize eight times.
Caroline Wood was recognised as a member (AM) in the general division for significant service to literature as a publisher, and to the community through a range of roles. Caroline is the co-founder and CEO of the Centre for Stories, and the co-founder of Margaret River Press.
Prof Michael Kidd AM was promoted to officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service in medical administration and community health, to primary care leadership, and to tertiary education. He had previously been recognised as a member (AM) in the 2009 Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Hon Justice Thomas Altobelli was recognised as a member (AM) for significant services to the law, and to legal education.
Professor Josephine Barraket was recognised as a member (AM) for significant service to education, and to the development of social enterprise.
Barbara Champion was recognised as a member (AM) for significant service to children through play advocacy, to local government, and to education.
Professor Mark Considine was recognised as a member (AM) for significant service to education, and to the political and social sciences.
Hon Maxine McKew was recognised as a member (AM) for significant service to journalism, to higher education, and to the Parliament of Australia.
Awarded a medal (OAM) in the general division were Dr Jennifer Buckingham for service to educational research and literacy; Emeritus Professor Clive Probyn for service to tertiary education; and Peter Tyrrell, co-founder of Vicland Surveying, for service to surveying, and to professional organisations.
We’d also like to congratulate former Copyright Agency Cultural Fund manager, Susan Hayes, who was recognised with a medal (OAM) in the general division for service to literature, particularly as an administrator. Through her career, Susan held positions with arts and literature organisations including Australia Council, the Australian Society of Authors, the National Playwrights Centre, Fremantle Writers Festival, and Varuna.
