Book industry event season is here!
May 6, 2022
The Australian book industry’s most exciting day of the year will be here on Thursday 9 June.
The 2022 BookUp Conference, and the Australian Book Industry Awards (ABIAs) will take place back-to-back, once again at the ICC Sydney.
This year, the first keynote speakers announced for BookUp are Carrie Bloxson, Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer at Hachette Book Group, and Prof. Veena Sahajwalla, an internationally recognised materials scientist, engineer and inventor. Experts in their respective areas, they will address some of the most complex issues of our current world – diversity and sustainability. More speakers will be announced when the full program is released in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!
Proudly supported by Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund, and presented by the Australian Publishers Association (APA), the conference is sure to be jam-packed with exciting, thought provoking panels and insights into future industry challenges. It will also provide a great opportunity for the industry to come together to network, celebrate and share ideas face to face, which has been a rare opportunity in the past two years.
The glitz and glamour of the ABIAs will follow the BookUp conference, with the in-person celebratory event to be hosted by Alinta Chidzey, current star of the Moulin Rouge! Stage musical, amongst a myriad of special guests and presenters. The Australian publishing and book industry’s achievements will be celebrated in style with a red-carpet cocktail reception, showbiz entertainment and live announcements for the big awards such as ‘Book of the Year’, ‘Small Publisher of the Year’, and ‘Publisher of the Year’. As ongoing partner of the ABIA Awards, Copyright Agency is delighted to be sponsoring the award for ‘General Non-Fiction Book of the Year’. The ABIA shortlist is set to be revealed on 23 May. For now, view the longlist here.
Following these exciting events, on 12-13 June, the 2022 Australian Booksellers Association (ABA) will hold their 98th annual conference and trade exhibition at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Sydney’s CBD. The program boasts an impressive variety of presentations and in-depth panel discussions.
The Australian Booksellers’ Choice Awards will be announced on Sunday night at a gala dinner hosted by well loved comedian Wil Anderson, who will speak about his new book, Wilosophy. The second day will kick off with an address by guest speaker Gabrielle Wang, the 2022-23 Australian Children’s Laureate, and will be full of informative panels and various other presentations.
For those who cannot attend in person, this event will also be streamed online. Read the draft program here for further information.
