A cultural history of Australia told through our fiction
Books That Made Us is a companion to the highly popular three-part ABC TV series of the same name, highlighting the literary history of Australian writers and their great works of fiction. The book, published by ABC Books (HarperCollins Australia), was supported by the Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund.
Australia’s novels lie at the heart of our country. Capturing everyday lives and exceptional dreams, they have held up a mirror to the nation, reflecting both the good and the bad. In Books That Made Us, author Carl Reinecke looks at Australia’s cultural history through the books we have read and the stories we have told.
Touching on colonial invasion, the bush myth, world wars, mass migration, the recognition of Indigenous sovereignty and the emergence of a modern, global, multicultural nation, Reinecke examines how these pivotal events and persuasive ideas have shaped some of Australia’s most influential novels – and how these books, in turn, made us.
A panoramic account of Australian fiction including award-winning writers such as Thea Astley, Peter Carey, Marcus Clarke, Helen Garner, Michelle de Kretser, Melissa Lucashenko, Henry Handel Richardson, Christos Tsiolkas, Patrick White, Charlotte Wood and Alexis Wright, this is a new history of key authors and compelling books that have kept us reading and made a difference for over 200 years.
First screened on ABC TV in November 2021, the complete series is now available to watch on ABC iview until 6 May 2022.
Filmed interviews with many of the writers also appear on Reading Australia (courtesy of ABC Education).
