May 27, 2021
Brigid Mullane, an emerging publisher at Ultimo Press is this year’s recipient of the Cultural Fund’s Publishing Industry Career Development Grant.
The grant will support Brigid to develop strategies to build Australia’s literary and narrative non-fiction readership.
Brigid is the commissioning editor at Sydney’s newest independent publisher, Ultimo Press. She has a long history of involvement in the publishing industry, having previously held positions at Hachette, Kill Your Darlings and Writers Victoria, plus prominent writers’ festivals (Melbourne Writers Festival, National Young Writers’ Festival, Emerging Writers’ Festival) and Melbourne-based bookstores.
Utilising the safe travel zone between Australia and New Zealand, Brigid plans to attend the biannual NonfictioNOW conference in Wellington in December 2021. At this foremost gathering of non-fiction writers, teachers, readers and students, she will meet with colleagues from emerging and established publishers to discuss readership development strategies.
Copyright Agency CEO Adam Suckling says, “We are delighted to offer our Publishing Industry Career Development Grant to an outstanding Commissioning Editor at a pivotal time in her career.
“Brigid’s upcoming discussions with her New Zealand colleagues, who operate in a similar-sized market to Australia, is sure to be fruitful not only for Ultimo Press, but also the broader publishing industry at home.”
