The John Fries Award  is an annual $10,000 art prize recognising the talents of early career visual artists.

Early career artists from across Australia and New Zealand are invited to enter the 8th Annual John Fries Award for a chance to win $10,000 in prize money and an opportunity to work alongside the new Curator and gain valuable industry experience.

The non-acquisitive Award has established itself as one of the most highly coveted Awards for early-career artists to advance their career and further develop their artistic practice – whatever their chosen medium – from painting to conceptual art, from performance to photography.

Every year the Award it increases in popularity. Last year, it received a record-breaking number of entries, making it the most competitive Award in its class.

The Call for Entries opens today and closes at 5pm (AEDT) Monday, 27 February 2017.

This year, entrants are required to sumbit a portfolio of five works created over the past three years, which demonstrate their commitment to developing their artistic practice.

The selected finalists’ work is exhibited in a curated exhibition at UNSW Galleries in Sydney, the Award’s presenting partner for the fourth year running. As part of setting the standard in industry best practice, Copyright Agency | Viscopy will this year pay each finalist $1,000 for participating in the exhibition.

Entry to the award costs $35 AUD. The entry fee is directly used to support the Finalists’ artists fees.
