Larissa Behrendt speaks on Legacy
Novelist and academic Larissa Behrendt will be talking about the issue of 'legacy' with Germain Greer at an upcoming Sydney PEN lecture on 18 November. Behrendt will also speak in Canberra on 24 November. Find out more and book your tickets here.
$3000 Young Writers’ Prize
Budding writers under the age of 21 are invited to enter the Young Calibre Prize, presented for the first time by Australian Book Review and the CAL Cultural Fund. The $3000 prize is for an outstanding piece of imaginative non-fiction. Closing date is 1 December, 2009. For those writers over 21, you also have until 1 December to enter ABR's annual Calibre Prize for an Outstanding Essay. Guidelines and application forms for both awards are available from

This Is Not Art 2009 wraps up
The national young creators' festival, This Is Not Art swept through Newcastle this October. Organisers said the '09 event was a "smash hit." Postgrads awarded AHA-CAL History Prize
Congratulations to the winners of the 2009 AHA-CAL postgraduate history prize for best postgraduate historical essay. Joint winners Lisa Curtis-Wendlandt and Claire McLisky were each awarded $2000, as well as publication in History Australia, the journal of the Australian Historical Association. Griffin Theatre's 2009 Playwrights' Residency
Griffin Theatre Company has offered three emerging playwrights a 2009 residency with the esteemed theatre company. Kamarra Bell-Wykes, Jonathan Ari Lander and Catherine Ryan will have access to workshops and professional development with the aim of working towards a final production. The Residency, supported by CAL’s Cultural Fund has been responsible for introducing playwrights such as Caleb Lewis, Tommy Murphy and Sue Smith to main-stage audiences. www.griffintheatre.com.au
AWGIEs winners announced
A big congratulations to all the winners of this year’s AWGIE awards, announced on 28 August. CAL’s Cultural Fund supported two major prizes. The $40,000 Richard Wherrett Prize for excellence in playwriting went to Patricia Cornelius for her play Tenderness - Slut. The $10,000 CAL Peer Recognition Prize was also awarded to the winner of the Major AWGIE Award for most outstanding Australian script – Samson and Deliah, the feature film by Warwick Thornton (pictured). www.awg.com.au

Writing in Sydney’s suburbs
With the help of CAL Cultural Funding, the Westside Writing Group is running a fortnightly writing group for emerging writers in Sydney’s western suburbs.
